Life in the Sticks: A Walk in the Woods

As I've said before, we live on a beautiful 30 acres just outside of Wasilla. When my husband first drove me out here to check out the property he wanted, I admit, I was a little terrified of living out in the boondocks with a little ghetto & our own private scrap metal heap hesitant about being 15-20 mins from town. Once we walked around a bit, I forgot my hesitancy and fell in love with the place. I loved the grass meadow, the beautiful birch trees, the fireweed (that blooms in the fall, which happened to be the season we were looking), the view of the mountains, and the quiet. It's so peaceful and quiet out here, I.love.it. Making the place even cooler for me is the fact that it was once an old homestead, both my parent's grew up on Alaskan homesteads so it gave the place a personal history (and a lot of junk to boot!:). We have lived out here for 3 years and I have rarely been sorry we are in the "country" (those few times I was there were many other factors involved that really had nothing to do with my place). This year, now that both boys are old to traipse about without being held every 10 mins, we have done a lot more exploring during the daytime hours when daddy isn't home. This week I decided to document in pictures our little outing to share with all of you. I hope you enjoy our walk through the woods....

Ready to roll! They LOVE exploring!

Stopping at the bottom of our hill for a group picture.

Apparently they are "pine cones" lol
One of the cooler pieces of scrap metal we have :)
Brothers...
We found animal bones! The boys LOVE bones haha, go figure!
I am not sure what this particular hunk of metal is. Any guesses? Sluice box perhaps?
An old pull behind rake for a tractor. The tractor it once belonged to was stolen the day we signed on the property. Don't get me started on how upset & disappointed I was!
Through the woods we go!
We also found moose poop...LOTS & LOTS of moose poop

Poor Josh scraped his leg up good, he wasn't so great at self propulsion after that.
We wore the old dog out, never thought this day would come !
We thanked God for the sunshine & marveled at it's beauty!
This is from inside a clearing. Forests are cool.

Someone's old tree stand.
Beautiful birch
We made it out! There's home!
They are such blessings, I LOVE these kids!

What I'm Listening To

If there ever was a song (that I've heard of late:) that perfectly describes what God has done in my heart this past year it is this one. It's beautiful,  it makes me cry. Without the work God has done in my life this past year I would still be living a life ruled by fear, self-doubt and condemnation. I am so thankful that we can run to the cross, He waits for us with open arms! I encourage you to take a minute to listen.

Here are the lyrics if you don't have time to listen....

No apologies

For who I'm meant to be
The only thing that matters is
I am free
When I am overwhelmed
Holding pieces of my heart
When I feel my world
Start to fall apart

To the cross I run
Holding high my chains undone
Now I am finally free
Free to be what I've become
Undone

Even in defeat
The face of tragedy
Still you'd have to say that
I found victory
In brokenness comes beauty
Divine fragility
Reminding me of nail scarred hands
Reaching out for me

To the cross I run
Holding high my chains undone
Now I am finally free
Free to be what I've become

To the cross I run
Holding high my chains undone
Now I am finally free
Free to be what I've become
Undone

Hallelujah I'm undone!

To the cross I run
Holding high my chains undone
Now I am finally free
Free to be what I've become

To the cross I run
Holding high my chains undone
Now I am finally free
Free to be what I've become
Undone

To the cross I run
To be what I've become
And I'm undone

A Challenge

I have realized in recent months that I have spent a large part of my life operating under a false identity. No, I am not talking "super spy" false identities. What I mean is I have had the wrong sense of self for many years. I think most of us struggle with this nearly everyday of our lives at least one time in our life, likely many more than that. It stems from many different things for different people, but the ultimate result is the same, we fail to see ourselves as others see us and most of all, as God our Father sees us. We often come to false conclusions about others and God as a result. Am I being confusing? Let me put it into an example of my life in order to better explain...
I am hard on myself, really hard on myself. I cannot tell you the number of times a day I think something negative about myself; my body, my recent actions, my parenting, etc... I am not constantly concerned with it but I just randomly think things or mutter things to myself that are not often kind and, honestly, I wasn't even aware of it until my husband, in exasperation, told me to knock it off until recently. This not-so-great view of myself makes it difficult for me to fully believe that my husband loves me as much as he says he does, it makes it difficult for me to accept compliments from people, affects my friendships at times when I assume someone is mad at me or thinks I am stupid. Why would I assume so? Well, I often think I have screwed up somehow (I have also recently realized I apologize for the silliest things!) Or I am stupid, why wouldn't they think so? Most of all, most importantly, this skewed view of myself affects how I view God. His word is full of wonderful truths about how He feels about me but I have, often in the past, had a hard time believing they were true for me. It's not because I doubt that God is real or the bible is true, just that according to my view of myself, the things He says could not possibly pertain to me. As if I knew more about myself then He, the Creator who knew me even when He made the stars, could know because if He did surely He couldn't love me like He says He does. I know in my head that this is a lie I've believed for many years, I want to know it in my heart. To believe 100% all the wonderful things in the bible are not just for other "more special" people, but for me too, because the truth is they are.

SO, does all that make better sense? That all being said, here's my challenge (to us both), it's a two parter. First I am going to read the Father's Love Letter, every day for a week (I'm starting with a week, hopefully moving it up to a month). You can find it here, or here (if you want the one page, written like a letter printable version). It's a beautiful compilation of scripture that perfectly describes the heart of God for you. If you are not a believer, check it out anyway, it really gets the most important aspect of Christianity in a "nutshell" and lists all the scriptures so you can check them out for yourself if you desire. I want the Truth to be engrained in my psychy, so on those days when I struggle with things I can pull them out of the filing cabinets in my brain and say "oh no, uh-uh, that is not the Truth of how God feels about you or about who you are".
The second part is going to be a little harder I think for two reasons a) it is not my mental "go to" and b) I have to be nice to myself. Here's my plan, I am going to list 10 things I like about myself below. I am not doing this, or sharing these to "toot my own horn" but because I want accountability (ahem, those of you I see often). Every time I start to think something negative about myself, I am going to say something positive instead. Every time I walk in front of a mirror and think "blech" I am going to make myself think "beautiful" or "princess" or "fearfully and wonderfully made" instead. My goal, as with the first part of my challenge, is to make this my new thought process. I suspect, my little exercise will have dramatic, life changing results. How we see ourselves so deeply affects every area of our lives, I figure it's about high time I give myself a break.
  1. Loyal
  2. Tenacious-I didn't realize I had this attribute until recently. God has shown me that the tenacity He instilled in me was at work many times in my life, keeping me from things. It also has been a tool used by Him to help me work through some rough patches, especially in recent years.
  3. Excitable-by this I mean I can still get as excited about an upcoming event now as I did when I was five...really, it's true & fun
  4. Joyful-it's my nature, I don't always operate under this but at my core it's who I am.
  5. Encouraging
  6. Compassionate
  7. Loving
  8. Transparent-at least I feel like I am, I am not perfect, but I try to be honest about myself with others
  9. Intuitive- I have a gift for seeing past what someone says or does to their motives.
  10. I'm a good mom- I struggle with this sometimes but if I really boil it down, I know that I am. I chose this one to remind myself because it's an easy one to forget, especially in today's world with 500 different opinions on how to raise your kids the "right way".
There, 10 things I like about myself. I encourage you to make a list of things you like about yourself, ask friends and family if you have a hard time with it. Remind yourself of these things when you start to be really down on yourself. We all make mistakes sometimes, I am not saying ignore your faults, it's good to be in constant improvement of ourselves, it's the human condition. Every day of this life I have here on earth will be about learning more about God, more about who He created to be and moving forward in an effort to be more like Him. I'll never get all the way there, it will always be a process, but I think a big step forward for me will be fully believing Him, fully trusting Him and I think this challenge will help get me there. Won't you join me?

From the Mouth of Babes- Oregon Version :)

Here are a few of little gems from my kids during our recent vacation to Oregon. My kids crack me up (& melt my heart)!

When we first landed, Isaiah was SO excited watching all the goings on outside the plane and he woke his brother up with his jubilant exclamations. When Josh woke, Isaiah excitedly pointed out things outside the window, saying "Look Josh we're in Oregon!! See that guy driving backwards?! It's cause we're in Oregon!".

One day we took a 2.5 hour drive to visit friends and family in La Grande, telling the boys where we were going, about a million times a long the way. When we reached our destination (a friend's house), Isaiah excitedly jumped out of the car, frantically looking around he said "MOM! I don't know which one of these buildings is La Grande!!".

I was talking to my niece one afternoon, she was telling me about her pink bedroom and I made the comment that I needed to have a little girl so I could paint a room pink. A few minutes later Isaiah pulled me aside and said "Mommy, you can paint my room whatever color you want. You can even paint it pink, as long as you paint it red and blue too". I told him I didn't want to paint his room pink, but he was so sweet to say that and he said, "Ok mommy, but if you change your mind, you really can paint it pink". It was so so stinking sweet and nearly made me cry but I made a point to tell him how mommy always wanted two boys (I really did), that God gave me them both and I was so happy to have them. Then I made a mental note not to talk about wanting a little girl in front of them anymore, the last thing I want is to make them feel like I didn't want them, because I did (do), a lot. :) I just love his sweet little heart.

Sitting at the gate forever on the plane to come home Joshua was saying he didn't want to leave Oregon. Isaiah looked outside (it was raining) and looked at Josh saying "Joshy, it rains every day and every week in Oregon, that's why Alaska is better so we have to go home".

Finally, I wish I had gotten a picture, Joshua thought the tray tables where "pillows" and he kept trying to fall asleep with his head (only his head) resting on one. Apparently he didn't find it comfortable because he eventually moved to laying his head on my lap, watching him try to get comfortable was pretty funny though.

Haha, this picture cracks me up. Joshua didn't want to get his picture taken so he made this horribly sad face and Isaiah decided to copy him. This was at the fish hatchery near Cascade Locks.

What I'm Listening To

I heard this song for the first time about a month ago, and it brought me to tears. Since then I have listened to it many, many times and it can still bring tears to my eyes. Maybe you are wondering why, maybe you're thinking "it's a beautiful song but why the tears...repeatedly?". The answer is simple, it speaks to my heart because I could have written it, word for word. It could be the theme song for most of my life. I have always, always, loved the Lord. I have always, always, believed His word is truth but I put Him inside a box. I made the box based on my views of myself, my idea of how other's saw me, and stuffed Him inside. When I first heard the song the line "those were only empty words on a page" didn't ring true with me at first, I thought "well, most of this song sounds about right, but I always believed His word was true". It wasn't until I'd listened to it a few times that it occurred to me that, despite always believing the bible and what God was able to do, I never believed He would do it for me, so doesn't that make the words empty? If I don't believe they have power for my life, isn't it the same thing? Invisibility and insignificance are two things I have struggled with my whole life, I even blogged about it once. Only in the last year have I learned that this view of myself as being unseen, unknown, not special caused me to limit my knowledge of who God truly is. I have experienced His presence many times over in my life, but I never really dove in so to speak, not like I could have, not like He wanted me to. Now that I see, now that I have tasted the real truth about God's heart for me... I cannot even describe it. I am left wanting more; to know more, to see more, to taste more, to feel more of the overwhelming, all consuming, never ending, never failing love of the Father. I want to experience more of His power manifested in my life, for His glory, for His kingdom, that my life would be used in an even greater capacity to show His love, His life changing grace and mercy to pour out into other's lives. Don't walk through life with a limited view of who He is, don't put Him in a box, give Him free reign, you won't be sorry, I promise.
(I posted the lyrics below the video in case you don't have time to listen to the song, so this blog makes more sense...listen if you can though, it's beatiful:)

I made You promises a thousand times
I tried to hear from Heaven
But I talked the whole time
I think I made You too small
I never feared You at all No
If You touched my face would I know You?
Looked into my eyes could I behold You?

What do I know of You
Who spoke me into motion?
Where have I even stood
But the shore along Your ocean?
Are You fire? Are You fury?
Are You sacred? Are You beautiful?
What do I know? What do I know of Holy?

I guess I thought that I had figured You out
I knew all the stories and I learned to talk about
How You were might to save
Those were only empty words on a page
Then I caught a glimpse of who You might be
The slightest hint of You brought me down to my knees

What do I know of You
Who spoke me into motion?
Where have I even stood
But the shore along Your ocean?
Are You fire? Are You fury?
Are You sacred? Are You beautiful?
What do I know? What do I know of Holy?

What do I know of Holy?
What do I know of wounds that will heal my shame?
And a God who gave life it's name?
What do I know of Holy?
Of the One who the angels praise?
All creation knows Your name
On earth and heaven above
What do I know of this love?

What do I know of You
Who spoke me into motion?
Where have I even stood
But the shore along Your ocean?
Are You fire? Are You fury?
Are You sacred? Are You beautiful?
What do I know? What do I know of Holy?
What do I know of Holy?
What do I know of Holy?

Friends, Faces & FUN

I am so blessed, really, really blessed. I have the privilege, the honor, to call many incredible women my friends. I spend time laughing, talking and occasionally crying with some of the most amazing women. I am blessed because I have many that have been my friends for years and years, we've lived a lot of life together and I am so thankful. I think women have such a gift for encouraging one another, lifting each other up and helping each other see the funny in life, whether it is plain as day or muddled a bit. I love each one of my sweet girlfriends for the unique and special way they have impacted my life and I am so thankful.
In the last week I was fortunate enough to get to spend time with a pair of these gals, two of my very best friends. We met in college when we were still just kids, became fast friends and have never looked back, that was over 12 years ago. Our lives now are a bit different then they were in our "early days" of friendship, we all have husbands, kids, busy lives and are separated by many miles but every time we get together, it's just like it was when we were first friends.every.single.time. We spend hours talking about life, laughing about silly things and staying up way too late, it's the best! The three days we spent together recently were fun, exhausting and full of lots and lots of laughter.
So, what do three "grown" women in their 30's (barely ;-) do for fun when the kiddies are asleep? Well, one night we decided to try out our friend Bri's new all natural skin care masks (check them out here!). I thought it would be fun to take a few pictures in them, Julia, who has a degree in photography and is pretty great at it, decided we should really take pictures (lights & everything) and maybe we could get some good ones to help our friend advertise while nourishing our skin and having fun. How's that for multitasking? That's another thing women are good at :). Once we settled the kids in, set up the lights and got the masks on, we got to "work". I am not sure that I have laughed that much in a long time, the mascara we wore to keep our eyes from disappearing in the pictures had to be wiped up more than once. At one point, I was not sure I was going to start breathing again I was laughing so hard. It was such a wonderful night, and because we are geniuses, we have lots of pictures to remind us of the fun, not to mention great skin.

Me, Karey & Julia, best friends since 1999 :)
Karey tried the Skin Cereal mask, I wore the Fruit Smoothie & Julia tested out the Mint Mudd
I was a bit over tired & super giggly
As if her skin wasn't perfect already, she looks gorgeous even with oatmeal on her face
Her products are all natural so you can actually eat them, if you wanted too. I did taste mine, it was sweet & tangy,  but I had the fruit mask, I am not sure you'd actually want to eat the mud one :)
I told you we laughed, a lot
